Playoff Predictions

Who else is excited?

Tomorrow we will find out which two teams will be headed to the Super Bowl here in Dallas. I am looking forward to some good old fashioned smashmouth football. In Chicago, I am rooting for the Bears but I don’t see them overtaking the Packers who have looked very strong in the playoffs. Then there is the Jets vs. Steelers game. I have to say that I did not expect the Jets to make it this far.  I am pulling for the Jets in this one and I expect them to win.

Super Bowl?

Bears vs. Jets

NFL Champ?

I think the Bears lucky run will end here. What do you think?

Lookin’ Good Mean Grean Basketball

Hello Readers!

For this week I am switching gears and discussing my favorite college basketball team. The UNT basketball team is on fire! At 16-4 (5-2), they are one game behind in the Sun Belt Conference and staring the NCAA tournament in the face. I am looking forward to it because unlike the other 2 trips they made to the tournament, in which they were immediately knocked out by top seeded teams they were doomed to play as a 16th seed, they seem to have a real shot at being a cinderella story this time around. This season the Mean Green have taken down big time programs in LSU and Texas Tech. Some may say this was a fluke but after watching this team grow for several years I really think they have found the right formula to contend on the big stage.

This team is the real deal! Watch out for the Mean Green of UNT!

What’s Next for the Dallas Cowboys?

Hey Sports Fans! The Dallas Cowboys season is over. Finally we can breath and look towards the future. What changes need to be made? Who should go? Who should stay? One thing’s for sure, they have a lot of work to do.

Jason Garrett is in as head coach. DUH! Did anybody expect anything different? I’m excited to see what he can do with his own staff and a full offseason to work with. The players are happy with him and that is a big factor. What are the concerns here? He is a first time head coach. So was Andy Reid. That answers that.

Free agency is upon us.

They Cowboys should be very busy making moves this offseason. They have a lot of holes that need to be filled. They should start with their biggest weakness which is the secondary. They were completely exposed this season as aging and just not very talented. Mike Jenkins, who was a bright spot a year ago, faded this season. Terence Newman, a guy who I am a personal fan of, is really showing his age now. He has lost a step or two. Alan Ball is talented but not consistent. Gerald Sensabaugh… Did you hear his name mentioned this season? Neither did I.

The three headed monster needs to end. Felix Jones has proven that he is the man at running back. Tashard Choice is a quality backup. There is no room on this team for Marion Barber. In prior seasons he was a wrecking ball that could not be stopped. Now he is just in the way. He had the worst season of his career leading up to the injury.

Roy Williams showed some improvement this year. Was it enough to keep his spot? He came in very handy when Dez Bryant was knocked out for the season and Miles Austin was suffering a subpar season. But we all remember that costly fumble at the end of the Saints game. I have not been a fan of Williams during his time in Dallas but I think unless they can find a good wideout in free agency, he will be back next season.

Marcus Spears. He has been a huge disappointment for too long. It’s just time to part ways.

DeMarcus Ware. Jason Witten. You are safe. Everyone else…Don’t get too comfortable!

Who should play QB?

Romo? Kitna? McGee? Romo is a good quarterback. Good. Not great. Jon Kitna had a very nice season and deserves to be considered for the starting job. His age is a concern. He will be 39 next year. Stephen McGee is young and inexperienced but showed some potential at the end of the season. He could be molded into a starter with time.

Receiving Core

Are they solid? Dez Bryant is fun to watch and will be special with experience. Miles Austin is obviously talented but is he really a #1 receiver? Roy Williams is the only big target on the field besides Witten. (Martellus Bennett is not even worth mentioning with this group). One more quality hands guy would be nice. Sam Hurd is not it.

Expectations

Can the Cowboys be a playoff team next season? I think so. Super Bowl? Not just yet.

UNT Football…What now?

Hey everyone! This week I am discussing UNT football. That is the University of North Texas. After yet another horrible season the Mean Green are making changes. New stadium, new head coach, new starting Quarterback.

First of all, the new ridiculously expensive stadium that the Mean Green will be playing in next season is supposed to bring in better talent? Are you kidding? If I’m a high school football star in Texas I’m looking at UT, (even after their pathetic season), Texas Tech, Texas A&M, (who went to the Cotton Bowl), OU, Oklahoma State, TCU, (Rose Bowl Champs), even SMU and Houston. Not to mention other powerhouse schools in the region like LSU. There is NO WAY I would consider playing at UNT because they have a new, big stadium. They couldn’t fill the seats in the old, embarrassingly small Fouts Field.

Secondly, Riley Dodge is gone. The Quarterback who was supposed to be the answer to turning the program around ended up being one of the biggest dissappointments in school history. He spent a big chunk of his time at UNT on the sidelines with injuries and when he was on the field I actually missed his backup, Nathan Tune, who showed much promise. Goodbye Riley Dodge! Enjoy the FCS, which is where you belong.

Lastly, Todd Dodge, that’s right, THE Todd Dodge from Southlake Carroll is FINALLY out as head coach. He won 6 games in 4 years. There is no excuse for that. He should have stayed at the high school level. Not all great high coaches are capable of making it at the next level. He has been replaced by Dan McCarney. He was head coach at Iowa State, then an assistant at Florida. He has major program experience, which I like, but he is coming in to a situation he is not used to. That is coaching a team with very little talent and the inability to recruit any. I wish him luck. He is going to need it.

Can the Mean Green of North Texas find the right formula to return to the glory days of the early 2000s? Only time will tell. Most likely it will take a LOT of time.

Until next time, thank you for reading Josh’s Jabber.
